The Comenius Project in England

Our school is taking part in a Comenius project with four schools from different countries.

We shall be working with schools from Poland, Hungary, Portugal and Turkey.

During the project children and adults in each school will have the

opportunity to learn about each country's history and culture.

You can find out about the first visit, to Turkey, HERE.
You can find out about the second visit, to Poland, HERE.
See the third visit, to Hungary, HERE.
The fourth visit to Portugal can be seen HERE.

Our visitors from Hungary, Poland and Portugal had their first day in school on Monday, 20th May.

They were welcomed into Lord Deramore’s with an assembly. Year 1 performed a play about working together and the Y5/6 choir sang.

All the children enjoyed playing rounders in the afternoon while the visiting teachers were

given a presentation about York and

the English education system.

The ‘My Hero’ Exhibition, in the churches of St Martin’s and St Helen’s, was formally opened by Mrs Powley and Violetta Kadar of the Hungarian team.

On Tuesday we enjoyed a tour on a City Sightseeing bus and were delighted that Mr Heale was able to join us for this.
Mr David Foster, our Chair of Governors, gave us an instructive mini tour of the bar walls . . .
. . . and just a few of the many historic sites in York.

We finished the day with a visit to the

Mansion House, hosted by the Civic Party.

On Wednesday it was a trip to Whitby and a steep descent from the Abbey down the 199 steps . . .
time to browse . . .
a traditional fish ‘n’ chip lunch . . .
then a wet walk along the harbour wall.

A walk up to the whale bone arch . . .

. . . and home via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Everyone enjoyed the Lego Electro City

Workshop on the Thursday,

baking traditional scones with Mrs Bradley
and the Best of British evening.
Our visitors, including Ms Güzin Genç who had joined us that day from the Turkish team, took the opportunity to thank Mrs Powley for the welcome they had received from the school community and an amazing week of experiences.
At the final farewell assembly on Friday, the teams and children from each country were presented with their certificates of participation and exchanged gifts

The Portuguese team showed us what

they had been hiding under their coats

and Mrs Powley showed the whole school the published book written jointly by all the Comenius partners, including our own Year 6 class.

The children sat enthralled watching the animated version of the story made by

the Polish team.

Time for a team photo before leaving for Manchester airport . . .

. . . but not before a slice of the cake Mrs Bradley had made especially for the occasion.

Thank you to everyone inside and outside of school who gave so much generous support to the Project and the teams’ visit to England.

We couldn’t have done it without you!
