Redhouse Children's Book Awards

On Saturday 21st February, Mrs Gardonyi and

Miss McCormack went with four children from Years

5 & 6 to the Redhouse Children’s Book Awards in London.

We met at 8 o’clock at York station

and got on the train to London.

When we finally got off the tube at Waterloo,

we found ourselves right next to the London Eye.

Then we were straight into the

Southbank Centre for the start of the event.

Before lunch we got to meet lots of authors and illustrators who signed books for us to bring back to school.
Some, like Tony Ross, even did personalised illustrations for us.
During the (delicious) lunch we sat with Steve Cole, author of Go to Sleep or I Let Loose the Leopard and got to present a portfolio of work to the book’s illustrator, Bruce Ingman.  The children asked lots of questions about how writers get their ideas and go about writing their books.

Lord Deramore’s got an extra boost at lunchtime

as our table won the book quiz and all the children

got some really exciting prizes including a print signed

by Axel Scheffler!

After lunch, we went to the awards ceremony (where we weren’t able to take photos).  We had a great time listening to all the authors talk about writing and watching the illustrators show us their drawing techniques.

It was fantastic to hear the winners announced and to see all the prizes being given.

We had a fantastic day meeting some of our favourite authors and illustrators and hearing how they work.

The children’s behaviour was outstanding and they were a real credit to the school.
